I first heard of Christian Science in 1923, and after attending...

I first heard of Christian Science in 1923, and after attending a lecture on this subject, I realized clearly that I had found the religion for which I had been longing all my life. I immediately began an eager study of all Mrs. Eddy's writings. I went to the church services, and spent many happy hours in the Reading Rooms. Soon my whole outlook on life began to change and expand, and my health also improved very rapidly.

I had always been subject to very bad bilious attacks, but these vanished completely while I was studying the mental case on trial in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 430-442). At the time, I was wearing glasses for all close work, having been told by an oculist that I had astigmatism and should always need them. But one evening, while studying the textbook, the truth of what I was reading became so clear to me that I took off my glasses and have never needed them since. In 1917 I had sunstroke, and thereafter, in spite of wearing dark glasses out of doors, having my hats lined with red and a strip of red material down my back, as ordered by a specialist, I was invariably seedy and miserable during the bright weather, and spent a great part of the time in a semidarkened room. When the bright spring days of 1924 began, I found myself wondering a little fearfully whether this new-found truth would also heal me of this condition. So I went and talked the matter over with a Christian Science practitioner, who at once calmed my fears by saying, "My dear, you live in the atmosphere of Love divine." As I realized the truth of those words I knew that I was free. And so it proved, for that very summer I was able to go sunbathing with my friends and lead a thoroughly normal, jolly life.

I have had many other healings: of nettle rash, violent headaches, and of chicken pox in three days, without any aftereffects. A badly sprained ankle was completely healed in twenty-four hours, through absent treatment. And on another occasion I was healed of influenza overnight. I went to bed speechless and in a high fever, and awoke well, and able to go down to the country that morning to sing in a charity matinee.
