God Is Love
[Original article in German]
"The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 140 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Who has not in apparently dark hours yearned to know this God who is Love? Many have turned away from what they have believed to be God, because they could not love a God who, as they have supposed, sends good and evil to His children, and in anger punishes them. To the majority of men this false, confused concept of God has been presented. A God who could send His children sickness, suffering, and distress because of their evil, sinful dealings must needs know these evils Himself, and could, therefore, not be absolutely good. Scholastic theology has taught men to fear this severe, inflictive God. Are there not many erring, weary wanderers, including so-called atheists, who find no peace or rest, because they do not know that the kingdom of heaven is "within" man's true consciousness?
The following definition of the "kingdom of heaven" is given in Science and Health (p. 590): "The reign of harmony in divine Science; the realm of unerring, eternal, and omnipotent Mind; the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme." We become conscious of this kingdom of heaven—the kingdom of peace—when we learn to know our real selves as the beloved children of God, subject only to the changeless, ever-operative spiritual law of God, and tenderly sustained and cared for by infinite Love.
