Everlasting Guidance

Moses heard the voice of God:
Wait by day and wait by night
For the pillar's cloud and fire;
They will lead to Horeb's height.

So in olden time the Lord
Spoke to trusting Israelite,
And the people, loving Him,
Waited for the sign of might.

By the same eternal Mind,
Jesus knew the power that led;
Shepherdlike to him appeared
Christ, the guide, and so he said:

When he putteth forth his sheep,
Still he goes himself before;
Never yet the shepherd sent
Sheep alone beyond the door.

If the porter stands on guard,
Wander not beyond the gate;
Sweetly comes the shepherd's call
To his flock who, patient, wait.

And a place is kept for you,
Safe as fold for resting sheep,
Thence the Christ, forevermore,
Guides through desert and through deep.
