Choosing Recreations and Companions
[Written Especially for Young People]
Christian Science is a joyous religion. It opens to us the vista of that joy to which the Master referred when he said, "Your joy no man taketh from you." It unveils the eternal fact that joy is spiritual, indestructible, entirely independent of matter, material circumstances or persons.
We need never fear that the gaining of this understanding of spiritual joy will cut us off from legitimate pleasure and companionship. On the contrary, it will build us up into normal, useful, joyous individuals. As we seek first the kingdom of heaven, allowing nothing to interfere with the study and prayer which increase our understanding of God, we find our happiness enhanced through this increasing spiritualization of thought.
The loveliness and grandeur of nature, the beauties of art and music, and the delights of wholesome companionship are to us temporal evidences of God's eternal care for His children. We glimpse, though faintly, the substance behind the shadow. We see, as it were, the grace and glory of Spirit piercing the veil of matter.
