Opportunity and Reward

"Oh, if I only had a position, if I only had a chance to serve someone!" This plaintive cry, which has been uttered by thousands of people in many parts of the world, impels every sincere thinker today to reason seriously on the subject of opportunity. Great changes have been taking place in the structure of society. Labor-saving machinery has been introduced to save time and minimize human drudgery. New methods of production and transportation have decreased the need for workers in many old lines of endeavor. All this has wrought confusion. These people want to work. "But where," they ask, "can we find jobs?" Many of them, honest and humble, are willing to be shown a way out of unemployment. For them, Christian Science has a satisfying and demonstrable answer. The rule to be followed is simple but positive, and the results are always practical and certain.

To be employed is to serve—to do helpful and constructive deeds for others. How natural it is for us to perform kind acts spontaneously for those who are dear to us! We seek out many little occasions to please them. There is no limit to our devotion to their welfare. We anticipate nought in return but their love. Do not these facts hint that the way to open the doors of continuous opportunity for service is to have a sincere and deep love for all mankind?

How shall we begin to learn to love our fellow men? Christian Science teaches that we must first understand Love as divine Principle, God, the All-in-all of being. Man, that is, the true selfhood of each one of us, lives, moves, and has his being completely within divine Love. It is therefore natural and normal that we should express love spontaneously at all times, under all circumstances, toward all peoples. As we begin to comprehend these facts and earnestly seek to demonstrate them in our daily lives, this true love grows in our consciousness, and we find many things that we can do for those about us. As long as there is a neighbor or a friend, if we have an abundance of love in our hearts we desire to help make life more satisfying, beautiful, and complete for him. When we realize the presence of God, divine Love, we begin to see the opportunity to be of service, to have jobs everywhere. If doors seem closed to us, we need but to claim our oneness with divine Love.
