At one time I was suffering from stomach trouble, which had reached the stage where I could no longer retain food. It was finally made known to me that I had cancer of the stomach, and that there was no possible cure for it. Several times a day I would get on my knees and pray to God to help me, for it seemed to me that my help could come only from Him.

One day as I read in the New Testament of the many wonderful healings which Jesus and his followers performed, I wondered why we did not have a denomination on earth today that could put his teaching into practice. Jesus told his disciples that the works he did they could do also. It was clear to me that this knowledge could be passed on to others.

I had a strong desire to try Christian Science. I managed to get in touch with a Christian Scientist, and she talked to me about it. It was like a new tongue, an entirely new way of thinking. The next morning when I awakened it dawned on me that I had retained my supper, the first time this had occurred for some time. How grateful I was, and I felt a blessed assurance that I had found the way. That day I received a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Casually I turned to page 3, where, referring to "the principle of mathematics," she says, "The rule is already established, and it is our task to work out the solution." That satisfied me; all my life it seemed to me that life should have a governing Principle.
