Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

This field was very fortunate in receiving in April, 1936, the visit of a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church. He delivered five public lectures, as well as several informal addresses, speaking both in English and in German, and much help and encouragement were derived therefrom.

The three weekly periodicals published in English in Rio and Sao Paulo willingly published two-thousand-word reports of the lectures. The Deutscha Rio Zeitung also published a summary of the lecture given in German. The Brazilian-American receives the Monitor regularly, and not infrequently quotes from its columns with a friendly reference to our great daily newspaper. This periodical and also the Anglo-Brazilian Chronicle published a notice of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church.

The year under review appears to this Committee to have been in Brazil a period of strengthening our position rather then of expansion. Difficulties peculiar to a country where the English-speaking population is in the main a floating one, and where the native language is Portuguese—in which Mrs. Eddy's works are not yet available in translation—have at times brought the suggestion that forward footsteps are hard to take. But surely we can take courage and inspirition from our Leader and ponder these encouraging words form our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 22): "Wait for your reward, and 'be not weary in well doing.' If your endeavors are beset by fearful odds, and you receive no present reward, go not back to error, nor become a sluggard in the race. When the smoke of battle clears away, you will discern the good you have done, and receive according to your deserving."
