The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Boston, Massachusetts (The Mother Church)

Lecturer: Francis Lyster Jandron; introduced by Miss Florence Siever Middaugh, who said:—

Perhaps at no time in the history of the world has mankind so much needed to know about government as it does today.

Any failure to solve a mathematical problem proves that the rules have not been applied correctly. And if one fails to govern himself harmoniously it proves that he does not understand true government, and how to apply its rules. Christian Science gives us this understanding. The lecture has a message for all; the lecturer will explain to us law and government as Christian Science reveals it.

Hollywood, Florida (First Church).

Lecturer: John Henry Weer; introduces by Floyd L. Wray, who said:—

Christian Science has helped great numbers to gain a better understanding of the Scriptures and of man's oneness with God. Christ Jesus, in his teachings, frequently spoke in parables that only a few of his listeners could understand. His disciples once asked him, "Why speakest thou unto them in parables?" and he answering said, "Because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand," and then he went on to explain that many of his listeners were reluctant to seek spiritual advancement, as they thought that they would have to give up all personal pleasures, were they to become more spiritually minded.

Until just a few years ago, I entertained a similar opinion, and it was not until I had attended several of these Christian Science lectures and had begun to study the Bible again, this time in conjunction with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that I learned that it was not necessary for me to give up all of my pleasures in order to follow the teachings of the Master, but that it was only necessary for me to give up my bad habits, which in fact afforded me no real pleasure and in some instances were quite harmful.

It was this clearer understanding if the Scriptures, gained through the study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, that enabled me to lay aside reading glasses that I had worn for a number of years. I was completely cured of the smoking habit, of social drinking, and also of several physical ailments, one of which was a chronic case of hemorrhoids.

Stroud, Gloucestershire, England (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduces by R. R. Guido Mann, who said:—

So practical is this scientific religion, or Science of Mind, that a listener who is really desirous of learning the true facts cannot fail to gain something from a lecture on Christian Science which he can apply in his daily affairs.

Many years ago this Science was introduced to my mother in an hour of great need, and it has been a source of blessings to her ever since. As for myself, though only a boy at the time, I found the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, so illiminating and logical that it healed me of a rupture from which I had suffered since birth, and for which a specialist had been unable to give any definite hope of cure.

The ranks of the Christian Science movement are filled with those whom it has healed of sickness, sin, or a deadened sense of existence. They are being awakened to the wonderful fact that, as Jesus indicated nearly two thousand years ago, the kingdom of God is within true consciousness.

Winnemucca, Nevada (Society).

Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Mrs. Theodora A. Cooney, who said:—

Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." That Christian Science is the truth that makes free, and that it has brought forth much fruit, is freely acknowledged in thousands of instances. It heals and frees mankind from sin, sickness, and death, and the beliefs of fear, doubt, lack—every ill, indeed, that flesh is heir to.

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, established the Board of Lecturership of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, as one of the instrumentalities through which this healing truth should be made known throughout the world.

Broken Bow, Nebraska (Society).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Mrs. Lyle Lomax, who said:—

The valley in which we live is outlined on the east and on the west by a row of hills. One cold, bleak evening, after the sun had lowered behind the western hills, a very bright light shone forth from the east. Its brilliance was startling. After a few moments of wonder we realized that it was the sun reflected from some windows in a house on the hill. How it brightened the close of day with its radiance! The windows were in the right position to catch the sun's rays, and we were in the right position to see the light.

Over nineteen hundred years ago there lived a man, Christ Jesus, who was in a position to reflect a great light to the world. This light was the truth about God, and about man, whom He loves. Knowing this truth, Jesus was enabled to heal sickness, cast out devils, and raise the dead.

Today, Christian Science again brings the light which heals, the truth that even now we are God's children, beloved and cared for by Him. We shall now hear something of this truth as Jesus knew it, restated in the Science of Christianity.

Bedford, Ohio (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Rose Kilian, who said:—

A lecture on Christian Science is a joyous occasion, for many carry away with them an awakened desire to know more about God; and they receive a mental stimulus which causes them to reach out after more of the good that is ready and waiting for them.

Christ Jesus said to his disciples, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." He also said, "Heal the sick." Christian Science lecturers truly are ambassadors for Christ, going into all parts of the world, preaching the gospel. And many healings are recorded as a result of these lectures.

To me, Christian Science is the "pearl of great price" of which the Scripture tells. It is like a compass by which we are guided safely across the sea of a full and harmonious life. The joy that has come into my life since I began the study of this Science is best expressedby by a line from one of our Christian Science hymns: "My heart is singing: I have found the way."

New Rochelle, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Morrison; introduced by Maurice W. Hastie, who said:—

No greater compliment can be paid to the lifework of Mary Baker Eddy, who brought Christian Science to this age, than the rapidly increasing number of seekers after truth who are turning to this Science of Life and finding in it the supreme good.

Mrs. Eddy was the Discoverer and Founder of the Science of Christianity, which enables us to apply the rules of living and healing that Christ Jesus employed. She was the first person in this age to heal a patient by Christian Science, or the divine law of God. After nine years of faithful preliminary work she published "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which has healed readers of every form of disease, and revealed God to thousands. She did this in the face of opprobrious opposition and caustic criticism. She did all this for the enlightenment and good of the world, that the world might know more of God, and that individuals might become more Godlike.

We, today, are the beneficiaries, of a rich spiritual legacy, which we can best appreciate by living the teachings which have been so clearly set before us, and by demonstrating the healing power and regenerative influence which this Science bestows.

Park Ridge, Illinois (First Church).

Lecturer: William Wallance Porter; introduced by Mrs. Ruth A. Reitz, who said:—

The giving of a lecture by the members of a Christian Science church is an expression of gratitude on their part for by so doing they are being obedient to the command of the Master, "Freely ye have received, freely give." Because a Christian Science lecture brings healing, peace, joy, and assurance to those who hear it, and because they themselves have received abundantly of these blessings, the members of this church are giving this lecturer for you.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," has written (p. 313), "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe." Christian Science is the law of God, as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. We may learn how to apply this law of God to our daily problems be they large or small. But as we listen to this lecture let us be mindful of Jesus' admonition, "He that hath ears to ther let him hear." In other words, we must be mentally receptive to the truth, if we would enjoy its benefits.

In my own experience, when I have been ready to "hear," willing to relinquish human will and material beliefs, and open my consciousness to spiritual truth, it has never failed me. It has healed numerous disease and discordant conditions, and has indeed become a guide for my daily living.
