Controlling Our Thoughts

[Written Especially for Young People]

Such remarks as, "This is my unlucky day;" "This is test day, and I know I am going to fail," are sometimes heard in the conversation of young people.

Even those who attend the Christian Science Sunday School occasionally say these things; whereas, if they stopped to think, they would realize how foolish this attitude is. If we make such statements, we must have some belief in them. This means that we believe some evil power controls our actions, and that it is impossible for us to do what we should do. Such a belief implies that we may have no more control over our own lives than have the puppets in a puppet show.

The assertion that there is an evil power, misgoverning our thoughts and our lives, is directly contrary to the teaching of Christian Science, for in reality there is only one power, the power of God. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 228 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God." Since God is good, this one and only power is good, and never causes troubles, misfortunes, or failures. Then where can there be any such thing as "luck," good or bad?
