"Memnon," in his letter on this subject in your issue of November 5, says that there are irreconcible differences between the teachings of Jesus and those of Mrs. Eddy. That may be honestly his opinion, but Christian Scientists disagree with him, and for this important reason amongst others. No one who honestly puts the teachings of Christian Science into practice and continues to do can fail to become more unselfish, more humble, more kindly, more healthy, more Christlike; in other words, a better man or woman. Jesus' test was, "By their fruits ye shall know them."

"Memnon" refers to three of Jesus' miracles, in which he says that Jesus used material means to produce the healing results. I should like to ask whether it can be suggested that anyone in Jesus' time or any doctor today would have the slightest expection of any healing taking place from the merely material actions of Jesus in any of the cases mentioned. The actions must have been intended in each case to convey some lesson to the patient which he needed to learn. For instance, in two of the cases mentioned we are told that Jesus "spat" on matter. To the Jew spitting was a sign of deepest contempt. Possibly Jesus wanted to convey a sense of his contempt of matter.

But by far the greater number of Jesus' healings were performed without any added material action whatever. He said, "Thy faith hath made thee whole," thus firmly basing all his healing on a mental or spiritual foundation. And Christian Science, following in his footsteps, obtains all its healing results in an exactly similar way through understanding the omnipotence of the God who is infinite Love.
