Give Me Understanding

ROSA M. TURNER

Dear God, I pray
Not for illusive gifts of wealth or fame,
For human power, or an illustrious name.
I ask each day
Thy tender law to understand, and know
The kindly ways that from Thy mercy flow.

Dear God, I pray
For knowledge of Thy gift of gentleness,
To know compassion kind and swift to bless.
I ask each day
To draw from Thy rich fount of love so deep,
The wisdom and the grace to feed Thy sheep.

Dear God, I pray
That Thou wilt open now mine eyes to see
The gifts forever Thou bestow'st on me.
I ask each day
For clearer sight, that I may understand
All things are mine, if I but hold Thy hand.
