How many times we read in a testimony, "After trying every material remedy I turned to Christian Science for help." If we would only turn to God first instead of last, as our Leader has directed us!

Three doctors had said that I must have a very serious operation; this filled me with fear. I had many friends who were Christian Scientists, but I considered myself loyal to my own church and would not listen to what they wanted to tell me. However, the time came when I felt as though I stood alone, with no one to turn to for real help, and I thought about God. I was well informed in the old church doctrine, and had always been a church worker, and knew there was a God, but how to be helped I did not know. At that time a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was given to me. I had to give up my position on account of my physical condition, and so went to live at the home of a lady who had been a good friend to me. She let me stay in her home for the summer while she went north. I read the Bible and the Christian Science textbook day and night. I often read out loud because I could not sleep. It was about two weeks before the thought came to call for help. Then I wrote a note to a practitioner, who came to see me. God, divine Love, alone knows what she did for me. The story of the woman who knew she would be healed if she could only reach Christ Jesus and touch his garment, will always stand out to me as the practitioner explained it. And as with this woman, so it was with me. I received the message, "Thy faith hath made thee whole."

I could not walk at that time, but would, by using a chair as a support, get to the kitchen and prepare myself some food, and when I knew the practitioner was coming I would go downstairs by sitting down and sliding from one step to the next. The second time she called we were talking about something I had been reading, and I said I would get it to show to her. I went upstairs, got the book, and came down again, not realizing that I was walking freely and painlessly. The practitioner began to laugh—and then I knew I was healed. This, my first healing, took place about ten years ago, and has been permanent. I have had many healings since.
