God Governs
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the Leader of the movement, says in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 90), "It is safe to leave with God the government of man." In all her writings she has made it very clear that the law of God, good, governs man. This fact is of supreme comfort to anyone who feels that evil can influence and affect him. The carnal mind would have us believe that we come under the influence of the sun, moon, stars, and planets, and that our work, health, and happiness are directly governed by them.
Suggestions that astronomical conditions govern our character and everything relating to our progress or failure, as the case may be, and various other superstitions, may present themselves. Therefore, it is most important that we obey our Leader's words in the Manual of The Mother Church, where she says in part (p. 42), "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion."
If we start the day by filling our consciousness with the truth about God, and about our relation to Him, we are setting up our sure defense. "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it," said the Psalmist, and we can accept this assurance for ourselves by knowing that "this day" which is God-governed is filled with opportunities to express our God-given dominion over every erroneous suggestion or condition.
"The day which the Lord hath made" brings with it no fear, doubt, disease, sin, discord, or death. It brings only love, health, happiness, fidelity, serenity, a larger understanding of God, a keener appreciation of our own and others' true selfhood. It brings forth no apathy or discouragement, but only alertness to duty, spontaneity, and right activity. Nothing can happen in this day to reverse the truth, for God is the only power and the only presence, and He governs man and the universe.
What a comfort it is for parents to know the truth and to be able to put it into practical use, assured that "it is safe to leave with God the government of man." When youth is going out into the world, perhaps away from the influence of a good home, meeting with all kinds of temptations and perhaps undesirable acquaintances, what a joy it is for parents to know this truth; to know that every moment day and night, the real man is governed by God, sustained by Truth, guided by Mind, and cherished by divine Love!
All the time and under every circumstance the alert Christian Scientist is companioned by right ideas. In knowing this truth and rejoicing in its ever-availability, the parent's thought is at peace. And his right thinking helps to bless and protect the child.
In our church work, and at members' meetings, it is of supreme importance to remember that God governs. Then, let us know that the work can be safely left to God's government. Let us also rejoice that we are awake to the suggestions of the carnal mind and to their powerlessness. We have a God whose "name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Knowing this, we are safe.
