About twelve years ago, when serving as an army staff...
About twelve years ago, when serving as an army staff officer, I had never heard of Christian Science. Confronted by an overwhelming problem causing considerable anxiety, I confided in desperation to a brother officer who, on producing from his pocket the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, said to me, "If only you will read this little book, all your troubles will disappear." Like Naaman, I "was wroth, and went away," and in recounting the incident to my wife, handed her the book.
About a month later my wife told me that she had read the book, that it was very beautiful, and that I should read it also. This I did, and speedily discovered that my informant was correct. Troubles, which were thought to be friends, such as false appetite for alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, all disappeared. An unsatisfactory and worrying financial situation, including the problem mentioned at the outset, was clarified and rectified. As a consequence I began attending Christian Science services and studying its literature, with the inevitable result experienced by all earnest students, that concepts of my profession, of people, and of daily activities underwent a revolutionary change. Criticism and sarcasm were giving place to tolerance and a measure of understanding, selfishness to consideration for others. In short, my embracing Christian Science proved to be the transforming process in "the renewing of [the] mind."
During the years following I have experienced and witnessed many moral and physical healing, resulting from the study and practice of Christian Science. My first physical healing was of quinsy throat. At the fall of each year I had been affected with this throat trouble, but on this occasion, when visited by a Christian Science practitioner, I was speedily healed, and there has been no recurrence.
