I have been a student of Christian Science for many...
I have been a student of Christian Science for many years and have received many blessings through the study and application of its teachings. I did not take up this Science for physical healing, but in order to gain a better understanding of God. In my early life, the seed of Truth had been planted in my consciousness through witnessing the healing of my brother of diphtheria, after two physicians had given him up. Later, a cousin was brought into our home and healed of infantile paralysis through the application of Christian Science.
Not until I had become a mother did I take up the study of this Science in earnest. I met much opposition on the part of one member of our household because of his erroneous concept of Christian Science. This opposition has been overcome, although it has required much patience and continuous work for many years. We have received many healings in our home, including those of influenza, sprained ankle, sties, measles, and boils.
Also, my gratitude is unlimited for a financial demonstration at the time I applied for class instruction. I had only a few dollars of my own, and could see no material means at the time for securing more; neither did I own all of Mrs. Eddy's writings at that time. When this was explained to the teacher, she lovingly pointed out to me what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says on page 241 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany": "Students who are ready for this step should beware the net that is craftily laid and cunningly concealed to prevent their advancement in this direction." Soon afterward my demonstration was made, both for my tuition and for my books; but error then began to talk, saying: "You have been wanting a certain material thing for many years. Now you have the money, go and buy it. You can have class instruction any time." This continued until the very day I was to enter class. I shall never cease to be grateful that I did not heed its voice and thus be robbed of that great blessing.
