Christian Science was truly given to me by God, for...
Christian Science was truly given to me by God, for without knowing anything of this Science I was searching for it. Did not Christ Jesus say, "Seek, and ye shall find"? Ever since I had become the mother of a family, I revolted at the thought that the children had to be subject to suffering in cutting teeth, as well as to children's diseases, such as scarlet fever and whooping cough. These seemed to me cruel and unjust laws, which I did not accept, and I began to hunt around and study various methods to prevent sickness. I was thus led to read scientific articles and to find one day in a review called "Science and Life" an article by a doctor, which discussed healing by Christian Science. I was keenly interested, and immediately wrote to this doctor asking him to give me some additional information. But he was not a Christian Scientist, so he transmitted my request to the editor of the review, who handed it over to a Christian Science Reading Room in Paris.
Finally, I received the precious information: I was advised to send for a book, called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I hesitated for a while—wasn't I going to incur unnecessary expense? At length, with God's aid, though not conscious of it, I decided, and very quickly received the treasure which at once set me on the path of Truth. I shall never forget my enthusiasm and also my hope, upon reading this great book, of seeing all our ills and those of humanity, in general, vanish. I shared the book with all my relatives and friends, but I scon learned that it is often better to be silent about the blessings which come to us individually. In the beginning, aside from my daughter, no one responded to or understood my joy. But we immediately had surprising and encouraging results. We needed time to fathom, understand, and study this divine Science, alone and without aid. Even now I am struggling to learn, and to make constantly better progress.
I wish to express my gratitude to a practitioner who, by absent treatment, was able to free me from defness in the right ear, which had been troubling me all winter. After several treatments I had a feeling one day that my ear was unstopped, and I distinctly heard the ticking of a little clock which before I had been unable to hear. After such blessings one cannot forget or fail to recognize the love of God, His Son Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy, and the consecrated practitioners who devote themselves to the work of healing.
