In reply to a correspondent who wrote regarding the teachings and practice of Christian Science, I would point out that a necessary condition precedent to the understanding of Christian Science and spiritual healing is found in the memorable conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, as recorded in John, particularly in two statements: "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit," and, "Ye must be born again."

The foundation of the Christ-healing is Spirit, not matter; is the divine Mind, not the human. Consciousness of existence must change from a material basis to a spiritual one before this healing can be accomplished. Because your correspondent cannot account for spiritual healing in any other way, he attributes it to hypnotism. But he is wrong. Christian Science unequivocally denies: (1) that hypnotism plays any part in its healing ministry; (2) that Jesus was ever a hypnotist or practiced hypnotism; (3) that hypnotism proceeds from God.

Your correspondent's self-confessed inability to understand Christian Science has led him to sadly misrepresent the character and life purpose of one of the noblest women that ever lived on this earth. It is due, therefore, to your readers that a correct appraisal should be presented, and for this purpose I quote Dean William E. Masterman, of the College of Law, University of Idaho: "A thorough and unbiased study of the life of Mrs. Eddy reveals a woman of great personal charm, rare culture and learning, a purity of life and purpose, unsurpassed selflessness, and the profoundest wisdom and spiritual discernment and understanding. She is, doubtless, the greatest prophet and benefactor that mankind has ever had, with the exception of Christ Jesus. ... Only those who have observed the beneficial effects of the application of this Science on the lives of others, or felt its benign influence in their own lives, can properly appreciate Mrs. Eddy and her mission and justly appraise her work in its relation to human welfare."
