Being Faithful

[Written Especially for Young People]

Young people in high school and university, or in the business of earning a living, often have so much to keep them occupied that it sometimes seems to them impossible to do all that is required. In the rush it appears that something has to be left out, and the temptation is to let this be the daily study of Christian Science. Or perhaps some event at the university or in the neighborhood may tempt one to omit attending a church meeting.

In her article on "Fidelity" in "Miscellaneous Writings" our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, analyzes the parable of the ten virgins. She says (pp. 341, 342), "We learn from this parable that neither the cares of this world nor the so-called pleasures or pains of material sense are adequate to plead for the neglect of spiritual light, that must be tended to keep aglow the flame of devotion whereby to enter into the joy of divine Science demonstrated."

If the student would only realize how important it is that he properly prepare his thought for the day, he would never skip the reading of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly in the morning, in favor of something that claims to be more urgent. The truth contained in the Bible and in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker eddy, spiritualizes the thought of the student, helping him to see the unreality of any claim of evil, and to manifest joy all through the day. He has learned more about God, good, and hence he is better able to express the qualities of good—kindness, intelligence, patience, gratefulness, and so on. It has been demonstrated, time and time again, that when God's work has been done first, all other work proceeds smoothly and often quickly to its completion.
