The Kingdom of Heaven
The kingdom of heaven! What is it? A place afar off in space, or is it a place at all? Mrs. Eddy tells us what it is on page 590 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes: "KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. The reign of harmony in divine Science; the realm of unerring, eternal, and omnipotent Mind; the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme." The kingdom of heaven, then, is not a locality, not a place near by or afar off; it is a state of consciousness characterized by harmony, and by harmony alone.
That "heaven" is a harmonious state of consciousness is made very plain by Christian Science, which reveals the truth that God is infinite, omnipresent, omnipotent Mind, Spirit, Soul, and that, since God is infinite and perfect, only harmony is present anywhere. That is spiritual fact. And as we understand it we see the necessity of demonstrating it. It is a wonderful truth, that the kingdom of heaven, harmony, is at hand to be proved; that we can enter it now through spiritual understanding.
Christ Jesus revealed the kingdom of heaven to mankind. That he considered a knowledge of the kingdom of the utmost importance is shown by the fact that he told his listeners many parables regarding it. In the thirteenth chapter of Matthew's Gospel actually seven of these are recounted. The parable of the sower tells of the nature of the kingdom, that it is good; the next—the tares—shows how to preserve it; the third—the mustard seed—refers to the greatness of its growth from a small beginning; the fourth—the leaven—indicates its leavening influence; the fifth—the hid treasure—teaches the need of searching for it; the sixth—the goodly pearl—speaks of its preciousness; the last of the seven—the drawnet—shows its universality. Every student of Christian Science will be rewarded by a careful study of these parables.
