During the financial slump I persevered in the endeavor...
During the financial slump I persevered in the endeavor to retain my sheep station, but eventually lost it, and also my health. I suffered severely from indigestion and asthma at this time. One Sunday evening my wife suggested that we go to a lecture. There was no lecture advertised, but a tiny notice of a Christian Science service caught my eye and I recommended that we go to find out what it was. We attended the service, held by a little group of twelve students, which we both enjoyed and I came away feeling much uplifted. During the next four days on the road droving stock I realized that I was freed from the usual depressed feeling; and I ate all my meals without suffering the effects of indigestion. The following Sunday I again attended the service and borrowed a copy of Science and Health, which I studied diligently, as I realized that I must find out what had healed me. After studying Science and Health together with the Bible for some months and attending services regularly, I found that asthma, from which I had suffered since I was thirteen years of age, had dropped away from me.
During the twenty years of my married life, up to this time, I had suffered every winter from severe bronchial colds, which necessitated my being propped up in bed in order to get my breath. Today I am a healthy man, many erroneous beliefs of disease have dropped out of my consciousness, and I have not had so much as one cold on my chest since first attending that Christian Science service some years ago. I am most grateful when I realize that this healing, together with the overcoming of the smoking and drinking habits, was brought about by the study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works, by attending all services regularly, and by giving of my best in service to the Cause. I am grateful to say that I have never missed a Sunday service or a Wednesday testimony meeting. The little group of students, with increased numbers, have now the status of a church, of which I rejoice in being a member. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and for class instruction. I cannot close without expressing my gratitude to God, to Christ Jesus, to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and to the small group of students who gave me the "cup of cold water."—Hewitt Deason Robinson, Papatoetoe, Auckland, New Zealand.
