Truth's Messenger

Dear Teacher, Leader, guide,Thy vision unsurpassedWas born of God.His angels taught thee, and with listening earAnd heart attuned to Love,Thou heard'st His voice; And in thy anguished nightOf darkness, loneliness, and pain,The Christ, Truth, came,And thou wast healedAnd joyous rose and walkedIn grateful evidence of thy new birth!

Could we whose hungry hearts were groping stillIn darkness ever cease to beGrateful to God for this,Thy constancy?Grateful, as one who, lost in desert wastes,His courage well-nigh spent,Is guided by another to a wellOf water,Living water—cool and pure and deep—Where he may frequent comeAnd slake his thirstTill satisfied!
