Truth's Messenger

Dear Teacher, Leader, guide,
Thy vision unsurpassed
Was born of God.
His angels taught thee, and with listening ear
And heart attuned to Love,
Thou heard'st His voice;
And in thy anguished night
Of darkness, loneliness, and pain,
The Christ, Truth, came,
And thou wast healed
And joyous rose and walked
In grateful evidence of thy new birth!

Could we whose hungry hearts were groping still
In darkness ever cease to be
Grateful to God for this,
Thy constancy?
Grateful, as one who, lost in desert wastes,
His courage well-nigh spent,
Is guided by another to a well
Of water,
Living water—cool and pure and deep—
Where he may frequent come
And slake his thirst
Till satisfied!

Our gratitude to thee should know no bounds:
Only as we bear witness to the truth
In hearts made pure,
In healing sickness, sin,
In loving all mankind,
Can we thus prove
Our gratitude and love.
Millions will rise up and call thee blessed;
Reflecting right,
Surely thou hast
Found grace with God,
Thou messenger of Truth's eternal light!
