From Letters, Substantially as Published
In reply to your correspondent let me say I quite agree...
Essex Chronicle
In reply to your correspondent let me say I quite agree with him that now is the time to demonstrate the divine Principle by which the sick are healed, the sorrowing are comforted, and the sinning are reformed; and Christian Science is teaching thousands throughout the world today how to accomplish these works. Testimonies of healing by Christian Science treatment given throughout the world at the Christian Science Wednesday testimony meetings, and published in the Christian Science periodicals, amount to several thousands a year.
Our critic quotes from Hebrews 10:14, "By one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." To be sanctified means to be made pure, perfect, holy, and this condition cannot be reached until we have worked out our salvation in the way Christ Jesus taught, by the surrender or sacrifice of everything unlike God, Spirit. By the surrender or sacrifice of his human sense of substance, in multiplying the loaves and the fishes, and walking on the water, he proved that substance is spiritual and indestructible. By the surrender or sacrifice of his human sense of life in raising the dead, he proved that life is spiritual and eternal. He required of his followers that they should do the works which he did, and so, by the relinquishment or sacrifice of a false material sense of life, eventually prove their at-one-ment with God, which is salvation.
It will be seen from this that the sacrifice of Christ Jesus does not lessen in any degree the necessity of working out our own salvation. He demanded that each one should prove for himself, step by step, that man is made in the image and likeness of God, immutable, divine Love. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 140): "The Jewish tribal Jehovah was a man-projected God, liable to wrath, repentance, and human changeableness. The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."
