It was through a Christian Science lecture sixteen years...
It was through a Christian Science lecture sixteen years ago that I became interested in this Science. The lecturer asked what we knew about God. What was God to us? Were we worshiping Him in the right way? Were we striving to keep the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"? Although I had been actively connected with an orthodox church from early manhood, I had to admit that I knew very little about God, and that I put several things before Him, such as my work, my sports, and my social activities. After the lecture I went to the Reading Room and borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I could not believe that it was the same book which I had glanced through in a critical and unsympathetic manner some years previously. Although reading and studying the textbook, I was ashamed to attend a Christian Science service in the city where I resided, so I took the opportunity, when away from home, of attending one of the services. I expected to find the congregation sick and full of complaints. Instead I was surprised to find them enjoying health, and there was such an atmosphere of peace and quiet at the service that I realized those worshiping there had an understanding of God which I did not possess.
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, although I have been healed, without medical attention or drugs, of chronic constipation, hay fever, periodic bilious attacks, inflammatory rheumatism, a discordant condition of the eye, and the need for glasses. While I am very grateful for these physical healings, I am even more grateful for the light the textbook has thrown on the Scriptures; it has indeed been a "key" to the Scriptures and has made the Bible the most up-to-date and precious book in the world to me. Through Christian Science I am experiencing a happiness and a peace which pass all understanding, and that I previously thought I should not experience this side of the grave. I am very grateful to God for leading me into Christian Science.—John Joseph Coulson, Warrington, Lancashire, England.
