Over twenty years ago I went to South Africa as an invalid suffering from severe lung trouble. I had previously been under medical treatment in Switzerland and also in a sanatorium in England. Before leaving London I went to see a lung specialist, who gave me what practically amounted to a death sentence, although he said that if I took every precaution and things went well I might manage to live, but could never be like other people. I rebelled against this, and against God, who I thought sent sickness and sorrow.
I was told about Christian Science by a friend in Pretoria, who was interested in it and had had Science help herself. She offered to lend me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but asked me not to keep it for too long a time, as she could not do without it. I eagerly read the book from beginning to end, and could hardly put it down, as something told me it contained the truth. The thought of God as a God of love, who did not send sickness and sorrow, broke up all my hard thoughts. When I had read the book through, I knew that I was healed.
Immediately I started riding and taking vigorous exercise. There was no gradual convalescence; I was entirely well. I was ready for the truth, and therefore had an instantaneous healing through reading the Christian Science textbook. I had no relapse or setback, and can honestly say that when I have honestly and intelligently applied Christian Science to all the ills that flesh seems heir to, it has never failed me, and I have depended on it ever since. It is quite impossible to express my gratitude to God for His wonderful love to us all, and to our Leader as the faithful messenger of this healing truth.
