Nineteen years ago a healing took place in our family...
Nineteen years ago a healing took place in our family which marked for me the beginning of a more earnest study of Christian Science. Although acquainted with and much interested in this Science, I had not yet learned how to apply this practical truth to my daily problems.
An opportunity to learn more of Science soon presented itself through the healing of our second eldest daughter of an abscess on her neck. For six weeks after it was lanced it remained an open sore. At this time the physician under whose care she had been from the beginning found a hard place at the base of the abscess, which he said was preventing the healing and which must be removed through an operation. This was on a Tuesday and the operation was to be on Thursday. It was then that my thought was directed to Christian Science, which I very earnestly desired to have for this problem, but another member of the family objected because that one believed that Science could not remove a growth. The thought then came to me that this was an opportunity to prove what Christian Science could do. The thought persisted until I took my copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy out of its hiding place, opened the book at the chapter entitled "Fruitage," and read what other people had accomplished through reading Science and Health. I was soon convinced that what other individuals had done through Science we could also accomplish.
I then began reading Science and Health at the chapter on Prayer. I not only read to myself every spare moment but also to our small daughter, who was then seven years old. We devoured this precious truth, often reading far into the night without the slightest inconvenience. We were so busy and happy reading about Christian Science that not much attention was given the neck other than to bandage it; but it was plainly evident that a healing was rapidly taking place. The improvement was so marked by Thursday that nothing more was said about an operation. In ten days the child's neck was completely healed. She is now a woman, and enjoys membership in The Mother Church and a branch church.
