Enfield Gazette and Observer
Your issue of November 23 contains the report of an address by a clergyman in which many statements are made regarding Christian Science that need correction. He says: "If [we] judged Christian Science by its philosophy and metaphysics which formed its basis, and without which it would cease to exist as a separate cult, [we] were obliged to say that it was neither Christian nor scientific."
Let us examine this statement:
The philosophy of Christian Science is the divine philosophy of Christ Jesus, who, through his knowledge of God and His spiritual laws, healed the sick and reformed the sinner as well as doing other works which were incomprehensible to the human or carnal mind. He stated very clearly the standard by which a Christian should be known when he said: "By their fruits ye shall know them," and "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Again, he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do." Christian Scientists acknowledge Christ Jesus as the Way-shower, and they are daily endeavoring to follow in his footsteps. They are Christians in proportion to their ability to emulate the works of the Master through gaining the Mind of Christ.
