"Avoid voicing error"

In her work "No and Yes" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 8), "Avoid voicing error; but utter the truth of God and the beauty of holiness, the joy of Love and the peace of God, that passeth all understanding,' recommending to all men fellowship in the bonds of Christ."

How much quieter the world would be if this injunction to "avoid voicing error" were more fully obeyed! How much more often would what our Leader calls the "angels of His presence" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 512) be heard, and the flood tides of Love be found with healing power! Talking error obstructs our realization of omnipresent good.

Nothing is gained, but much harm done, as news of some disaster, epidemic, or other evil is repeated from mouth to mouth; for error voiced is not mentally destroyed. The overcoming of this temptation will add to the world's storehouse of good; it will help to destroy in human consciousness belief in the power of evil. To "utter the truth of God and the beauty of holiness" enlightens thought with the very presence and power of Love, and this stills the tempest, quiets fear, proves evil powerless, makes whole the sick and the sorrowing. How often a sharp word would be withheld, a criticism stifled, if in heeding this and many other such behests of our beloved Leader, we would put the finger on the lips, pause, wait on God, then speak the word that shall not return void. Or, to maintain golden silence, filling our consciousness with spiritual love that replaces error with truth, will give the lie to the suggestions of material sense and bring into our consciousness the "beauty of holiness," whose loving radiance is felt in some degree by all with whom we come in contact.
