The Committee on Publication for Northern California, Mr. George Channing, was this year invited to be present at the Commencement Exercises of the San Francisco State Teachers College, and to give the invocation and the benediction. As is usual when a Christian Scientist conducts prayer at a public gathering, Mr. Channing invited the audience to unite in silent prayer and to repeat afterward, audibly, the Lord's Prayer. Later, several expressed to him their feeling that this prayer was significant and impressive.
The benediction expressed the wish that the members of the graduating class go forth "under the guidance of God, . . . to bless and benefit their fellow men and themselves." After a few suitable remarks, Mr. Channing closed with Numbers 6:24-26: "The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: the Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace."
