I have felt for a long time that I should write and express...

I have felt for a long time that I should write and express my gratitude for Christian Science and the many proofs I have had of its protecting and supporting power in times of physical, financial, and mental distress. It is my great privilege to have been brought up in Christian Science, and I think that more than anything else I am grateful for the fact that though I have had many problems to meet, I have not had to overcome a background of fear and belief in material medicine.

Throughout my school and college years it was always a great help to me to know that I reflected and expressed divine intelligence. When I graduated, the profession for which I had been trained was greatly overcrowded. The sense of peace and of the permanence of God's work that I gained during this experience was both comforting and inspiring. It gave me fresh courage to face my responsibilities and a new appreciation of what a rich spiritual heritage I possessed. I knew then what Mrs. Eddy meant when she said, in her poem "Satisfied" (Poems, p. 79):
