I have felt for a long time that I should write and express...
I have felt for a long time that I should write and express my gratitude for Christian Science and the many proofs I have had of its protecting and supporting power in times of physical, financial, and mental distress. It is my great privilege to have been brought up in Christian Science, and I think that more than anything else I am grateful for the fact that though I have had many problems to meet, I have not had to overcome a background of fear and belief in material medicine.
Throughout my school and college years it was always a great help to me to know that I reflected and expressed divine intelligence. When I graduated, the profession for which I had been trained was greatly overcrowded. However, through the operation of divine Love alone, a new opportunity was presented to me, and I have been led to make happy and pleasant connections in a new field.
I was healed of sore throat. The soreness recurred for several years, until I saw that I had been expressing unloving and irritable thoughts. I have also witnessed the complete healing of a loved one of a severe case of erysipelas through the work of a practitioner; and I myself was free from any fear of contagion while taking complete care of this member of my family. The greatest test of my faith came with the passing on of my father, when I seemed unable to think clearly or to see the unreality of the belief in separation. At this time I was privileged to stay at The Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium in Boston, Massachusetts, and to visit The Mother Church; and my healing of grief came during a Sunday service there, when I realized that the real man is indestructible. The sense of peace and of the permanence of God's work that I gained during this experience was both comforting and inspiring. It gave me fresh courage to face my responsibilities and a new appreciation of what a rich spiritual heritage I possessed. I knew then what Mrs. Eddy meant when she said, in her poem "Satisfied" (Poems, p. 79):
