Position and Possession

There are perhaps no other words that, taken in conjunction, give greater concern than these two: "position" and "possession." One finds them to be more intimately related in meaning than a cursory glance indicates. More closely considered, they appear to be almost synonymous. Both position and possession are engaging serious attention today, because they involve human activity.

Men still believe that they are maintained through the moneys accruing by reason of holding certain positions, and that the measure of a good position determines in large part the measure of good possessions; but the acceptance of a higher standpoint that the material must be the starting point to correct analysis.

Position, as understood in Christian Science, is a mental concept, not a material location. Likewise, possession is a mental concept. "Being possesses its qualities before they are perceived humanly," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 247). Not for an instant is God's man separated from divine qualities; yet men and women continue a blind search for that which is already established as a divine fact about man. One is fulfilling his right position when expressing Godlike qualities, such as trust, confidence, understanding, peace, love, and joy, whether he is on the throne of a king or merely spreading a carpet on which kings may walk.
