"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord" (Ps. 37:23)—It may be noted that the word "good" is not represented in the original Hebrew. Moreover, the term rendered "ordered" is more literally "established," while scholars contend that the word "steps" is used figuratively of a man's "course of life" (Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 857). The Revised Version suggests the translation: "A man's goings are established of the Lord;" while Moffatt renders the complete verse as follows: "When a man's life pleases the Eternal, he gives him a sure footing."

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly" (Ps. 1:1)—The Hebrew preposition rendered "in" often means "by" and so Moffatt renders: "Happy the man who never goes by the advice of the ungodly" and continues, "who never takes the sinners' road." An alternative rendering would be: "Happy the man who does not follow the advice of the ungodly."

"There is none else" (Isa. 45:5)—In the original, the words "En oth"—literally "there-is-not-besides" (cf. Brown, etc., op. cit.)—can mean either "there is none (i.e. no-one) else" or simply "there is nothing else."
