The common opinion of mankind has always been that...
The common opinion of mankind has always been that advanced age is a hindrance or a stumblingblock to physical healing. This erroneous theory, however, is completely refuted in Christian Science practice. Mrs. Eddy admonishes her followers, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 246), "Never record ages;" and, "Time-tables of birth and death are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood." She sums up the question of age in a few short statements on the same page: "Life and its faculties are not measured by calendars;" and, "The measurement of life by solar years robs youth and gives ugliness to age."
During the past ten years many beautiful healings, physical, moral, and financial, have taken place among the members of my family. One of these healings, which I wish to emphasize particularly, was that of my father, a man of eighty-two years. He had been seriously injured in an automobile accident. The car in which he was riding struck an embankment at a terrific rate of speed and completely overturned, pinning him and the driver underneath. The young man driving the car was uninjured, but my father, after being taken to the hospital and examined, was found to be suffering from two broken ribs and some very serious body wounds.
Several days later the family was informed that he had contracted pneumonia, and that there was very little hope of saving his life because of his advanced age. The verdict was rendered by the doctors on a Thursday evening. We refused to accept this verdict of mortal, mind, but vigorously and persistently contradicted this testimony and affirmed and reaffirmed the fact that man is a perfect idea of the perfect Mind; a perfect child of his perfect Father-Mother God, harmonious, indestructible, and eternal; that he is perpetually healthy and vigorous; that God is his life, his strength, his all-in-all; that he is immune to and completely protected against physical laws of old age and decrepitude. We also affirmed and realized the fact that the element of time in days, weeks, months, and years is merely a measurement of the carnal mind and is not a factor in any case. There is no time in God's universe. The Psalmist assures us, "A thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night."
