I found Christian Science when I had been earnestly...
I found Christian Science when I had been earnestly seeking the truth about God and His harmonious kingdom. In orthodox theology I could not reconcile a perfect creator with an imperfect, sinning creation. I am so grateful that when the facts of true being were presented to me I was receptive; for a continued and earnest study of this Science, including class instruction, has culminated in many healings, physical, mental, and financial, and has brought into our home a greater sense of love and harmony. For many years I stood alone with my convictions, but now other members of my family are studying this practical Science and relying upon it for help.
Ten years ago I had an interview with a Christian Science practitioner, the keynote of which has stood out like a beacon light to me ever since—that error has no tenacity because God alone possesses all power to hold all things as He created them.
When our small son was about a year old and learning to walk, he developed a strange malady which prevented him from even sitting up. One of the city's best child specialists was called in, and although I was obedient to her instructions with regard to the child there was no improvement after several months. One day the prescription again needed filling and I asked my husband if he cared to attend to this, but called his attention to the medicine's inefficacy. He suggested that we give up not only the medicine but also the specialist, insisting first, however, upon a diagnosis, for we had been given no hint as to what the malady might be. Reluctantly the specialist gave me the verdict of paralysis; but because of my insistent attitude that it was not incurable, she admitted that the healing was possible, but only after a very long time, and with a great deal of treatment and patience. I told my husband that I had decided to reject mortal mind's testimony, that I was trying to acknowledge God as the source of all freedom and health, and that I would patiently try to see God's child as reflecting only these Godlike qualities. We never named the malady again, not even discussing the child's condition with well-meaning friends and relatives. Not long after this the child seemed to be passing on in a fit of convulsions. My husband called the specialist, but due to her misunderstanding of the seriousness of the situation she refused to make a midnight call. My husband then said we would never again call a physician. I knew that our opportunity to trust God had come, and I was confident that He would not forsake me or mine. After silently refuting all sense testimony with as many of the statements of truth as I could remember in the stress of the moment, I noticed that the child gradually became more and more quiet, until finally he fell asleep in my arms. The healing was marked from that time on, although it was several months before the child again learned to sit up, and then crawl and walk. Today he is one of the fleetest of foot among his companions, as well as exceptionally alert mentally.
