While I was visiting in Illinois in November, 1924, Christian Science...
While I was visiting in Illinois in November, 1924, Christian Science was first presented to me. In knew nothing of it except the name. I was seeking help for pain in my side of some years' standing. Osteopathic treatments were being tried, but to no avail. Then a sister-in-law asked me to visit her neighbor to learn something of Christian Science, as she herself had received help from this friend, although she had not accepted this Science as a religion. All that I heard concerning the healing power of Christian Science sounded so reasonable that I at once made an appointment with a practitioner, and purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
All I can recall of my first treatment is this sentence (Science and Health, p. 2): "God is 'the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever.'" The treatment did not seem to mean much to me, but Christian Science was my only hope. My mother had passed on with cancer, and that seemed the thought uppermost in my mind. After seven weeks I returned to my home in a small town in North Dakota. The practitioner had recommended that I purchase the Christian Science Quarterly and take up the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon. For this I shall never cease to be grateful. Although the physical healings experienced have been wonderful, I believe I am most grateful for a better understanding of the Bible. I had always tried faithfully to glean an understanding from its teachings, and to learn how they might be applied in daily life, but without success. Now the study of the Bible, together with Science and Health, forms the happiest part of the day, for I have learned how to apply Christian Science to every problem.
The trouble in my side did not yield for some time, but other healings quickly took place. When I began to read the textbook I had to read lying down, owing to extreme fatigue. When the healing from this complaint took place I do not know; but it was soon. A distressing stomach ailment soon disappeared, but returned in the spring. I called a friend, a student of Christian Science, for help, and the trouble vanished, never to return. It took many months of patient, loving helpfulness on the part of this dear friend to eradicate the pain in my side. All the days of my life I shall be grateful for her work and for her understanding of God's laws.
