I feel most grateful for a demonstration of healing in...
I feel most grateful for a demonstration of healing in Christian Science, one which provided a wonderful lesson on the unreliability of sense-testimony, and which showed the power of the divine Mind over matter. At the plant at which I am employed a new machine had been erected. As I was preparing this machine for work my coat sleeve was caught by two inwardly revolving cogged wheels and my forearm was drawn between them. Divine protection immediately was realized, and I felt no pain, although my arm was bleeding profusely. I was bandaged up roughly and taken to a hospital. During the journey and while waiting attention I endeavored to hold to the truth. The thought which came to me was, God's man is wholly spiritual, therefore he must be spiritually whole. I held to this thought throughout the various processes normally conducted in a surgical hospital. Meanwhile, a Christian Science practitioner, to whom I had managed to send a message, was working for me and visited me shortly after I had been placed in bed. Her help and kind words comforted me a great deal, the pain caused by the tourniquet abated considerably, and I felt much easier. She continued to help me during the whole experience.
An operation was performed under an anaesthetic, and there were no after effects. Next morning my employer was told that the condition was serious and I should be in the hospital for at least fourteen days. In three days I felt perfectly well, however, and was allowed to return home. On the fifth day I was back at work, much to the surprise of my fellows, and although I still carried my arm in a sling I was able to use it, and frequently removed it from the narrow ribbon support.
On this day I had occasion to obtain from the surgeon in charge of the case a report showing the extent of the injury. This was for my employer's use in connection with some insurance claim. In the tram coming home I foolishly read this report. It was quite alarming in its descriptions. It also stated I must on no account move my arm for at least six weeks, and here I had been using it six days after the injury! Mortal mind had a shock. It suggested dire consequences, which I believed, so I obediently tucked the arm into my coat for support. A few minutes after this I became conscious of a severe pain, and an aching and burning sensation. Thanks to Christian Science I immediately realized what had taken place. I saw that my arm was non-intelligent and had no sensation of itself. I understood that without the knowledge of the one divine Mind and the help of Christian Science the arm would have been painful all the time, instead of being normal. I had the wonderful experience of seeming to become detached from my body and looking down upon it to see it being led along and told by mortal mind to ache and perform according to material law, whereas the fact was that I, God's man, was apart from and far above this seeming mortal body and material law. I felt so overwhelmingly grateful for this revelation, and the whole incident appeared to be so ludicrous that I found myself laughing at it. Needless to say, the pain vanished. I was tempted with its return several times, but after I had a talk with the practitioner it was permanently overcome. My arm is now entirely normal and as good and strong as the other.
