Obedience through Love

[Written Especially for Young People]

When young people become students of Christian Science, one of the spiritual qualities first impressed upon their thought in their own study, in their homes, and in the Christian Science Sunday School is that of obedience. Human thought rebels at what it mistakenly believes obedience to be, but through the understanding of Truth obedience is found to be in the realm of Love; and there it unfolds in orderly naturalness.

A young girl had been brought up to be blindly obedient to whatever her elders requested her to do. Through a sense of respect to them she accepted her tasks and duties, sometimes with rebellion in her heart and at other times with a false sense of resignation. Then came a time of tribulation in her life, when sickness and unhappiness seemed to hold sway in her thought and experience. The healing power of Christian Science was proved, and in one treatment she was healed of a malady which for two years had baffled medical skill.

So grateful was she for the healing that she set about being an earnest student of the Bible and our Leader's writings. Among these she found much food for thought in the Manual. What did she do? Did she resist the disciplinary Rules laid down in this book? Did she again inwardly resist the thought of obedience which had given her such a struggle in her earlier life? No, she did not; for through her study of our Leader's life and writings she had gained a new sense of true obedience.
