My gratitude for God's infinite love impels me to tell of...
My gratitude for God's infinite love impels me to tell of two of my experiences in Christian Science.
In March, 1929, I was taken ill with rheumatism and from it contracted a heart ailment. At first the condition did not seem to be serious, but from month to month this heart trouble gave me more difficulty, so that finally I often could do my work only with the greatest effort. Several physicians had examined me and given me treatment; but the time came when the doctors frankly admitted their inability to cope with my case and gave me no hope of recovery. After an unsuccessful stay at a resort for the cure of heart trouble, it became clear to me that I could indeed receive no help from doctors. I tried a homeopath and then high-frequency electrical treatment; but things continued to grow worse.
At last in March, 1931, I found the way to Christian Science. I asked for treatment, though with little hope after my many disappointments in applying material remedies. Through leading me into the teaching of our beloved Leader, the practitioner understood how to impart, first of all, hope of recovery, then faith in God, and finally the true understanding of God. Up to that time I had been greatly averse to any religion. In school we had been taught that God punishes every mistake, and that all trouble is ordained of God; whether it be punishment or purification, it must be endured. Such a Deity I had never been able to love; in such a Deity I had never been able to believe. But now in Christian Science I learned the true view of God. I learned to love Him and to believe in Him. As I progressed in Science, step by step, my condition improved in proportion to my progress in understanding. Whereas it was formerly very difficult for me to go upstairs, after two months of Christian Science treatment I was again able to swim and to use my bicycle. Today I am perfectly well and equal to any physical exertion.
