I wish to express heartfelt thanks for the many blessings...
I wish to express heartfelt thanks for the many blessings which I have experienced through Christian Science. I was quickly healed of a chronic stomach and intestinal trouble. An eye trouble, which the physician called cataract, disappeared just through my reading the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had also had from childhood an ear trouble which no specialist could heal, but this, too, has fallen away from me through Christian Science.
Early in 1931 I had such a bad fall on the street that I could not get up alone. I had to be carried and was taken to the police station. There were dreadful pains in the left side of my breast and it hurt me to talk. The official in charge spoke of a doctor, but I would not listen to that. I asked him just to connect me with a certain telephone number, that of a Christian Science practitioner, whom I asked for help, which was generously given me. The practitioner came at once to the police station—it was then ten o'clock in the evening—and took me home in his car. Thanks to his blessed work, I did not need to stay in bed a single day, but the pain did not disappear entirely. I knew that the practitioner had done his work thoroughly, and that the pain came only from my wrong thinking. Then one day I saw that I was often thinking, when feeling the pain, If only the ribs were healed now; or, Shouldn't I have had a tight bandage? or, The broken ribs must be pressing against the lungs, and that is why it is so hard to breathe. I knew that I should not be thinking that way if I were expecting immediate and complete healing. To be sure, the practitioner was also declaring the truth about it to me; nevertheless, the wrong thoughts kept coming back until one day I read in the textbook (p. 402) that "man is indestructible and eternal." Through earnest study of this sentence it became clear to me that I was, of course, perfectly well; and immediately all pain fell away from me.
I am heartily thankful to God for this healing and for the lesson which I have drawn from it, namely, that I must always stand on guard at the door of thought; that is, I must always protect my consciousness from false, sick, or destructive thinking.
