In your issue of August 24 is an account of an address by the editor of Our Hope, before the Stony Brook Assembly, Inc., in which he classified Christian Scientists with bootleggers, gangsters, and gamblers, as the "enemies of Christ." In view of the fact that this report conveys so much misinformation in regard to Christian Science, I should appreciate the privilege of brief space in your publication for a correction of the misstatements the report contains.

Christian Scientists obey the law, are friendly neighbors, and are good citizens generally. They accept the words and works of Christ Jesus at their face value. They believe that Christ Jesus meant what he said when he told his disciples, as recorded in John, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Christian Scientists not only believe that Jesus meant what he said, but they have proved it, because they have healed sickness, both functional and organic, by means of spiritual understanding, and have built up a great denomination, principally from the ranks of those who have been healed through Christian Science. Should any criticism be aimed at Christian Scientists because they believe so fully the words which Jesus spoke that they put those words into practice? Should Christian Scientists be classified with the bootlegger, the gangster, and the gambler because they believe in Christ Jesus so implicitly? Christ Jesus also said, "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them," and Christian Scientists, in their kindliness and recognition of the rights of all, are adhering to this Christian rule.

Christian Science is the Christian religion and is based upon the Bible, particularly upon the words and works of Christ Jesus, the Way-shower. Mrs. Eddy got her teachings entirely from the Bible. In fact, the very first tenet of the Christian Science church states definitely, as found on page 497 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." What better basis can any Christian find? Christian Scientists are perfectly willing to have the efficacy of this religion judged entirely by the results. Results form the only practical test of the right of any religion to recognition.
