Casting Out Fear

Fear is one of the worst enemies of the human race. It claims to paralyze the activity of good; to act as a brake on progress; to be one of the chief sources of disease; and frequently it appears to be a cause of crime. Further, how common it is for mortals to look back on the past, as if they saw coming out of it towards them the specters of their foolish or sinful acts; and how common also for them to look with dread into a future, entirely undefined, anticipating all manner of evil! Probably mankind dreads nothing so much as fear. What would it not give to be free from fear?

In her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 13), "A man's fear, unconquered, conquers him, in whatever direction." How true are her words! And they certainly prompt the questions: How shall fear be overcome, cast out of human consciousness? What must men learn that will enable them to master that which would master them? Is there a way, a rule, that can be understood and applied to conquer fear? Christian Science returns the answer, Fear can be mastered, overcome, cast out, in a scientific manner by all who will study this Science, gain an understanding of its Principle, and apply its rules.

To begin with, Christian Science affirms that fear has no cause and is therefore not a real effect; that it is a false state of consciousness. Thus, since fear has no cause, no Principle, to support it, it can be scientifically overcome by understanding its unreal nature. And, of necessity, with the destruction of fear its so-called effects will be likewise overcome, or prevented. More particularly, How does Christian Science reason on the question? It teaches that God is infinite good. Since God is infinite good, no power the opposite of good exists as reality. Then, if in reality there is no evil power, what is there to fear? Nothing. No suggestion of the carnal mind can possibly alter that fact, which is established through divine Science; and sooner or later all men will through spiritual understanding come to recognize it and acknowledge it.
