Our Master said, "Freely ye have received, freely give."...
Our Master said, "Freely ye have received, freely give." I am one who has received innumerable blessings from the study and application of Christian Science, and I feel that it is a joy and privilege to tell others of some of the healings I have experienced.
About seven years ago, when we seemed at the end of things, surrounded by poverty and sickness and not knowing which way to turn, a cousin paid us a visit and introduced Christian Science to me. The last time we had seen her was two years before, when I had been completely given up by the doctor and was suffering from hemorrhage of the lungs. The doctor had told my people that I was beyond human aid, and they were to send for the certificate when I passed on, as everything was in order. In spite of the doctor's verdict, however, I recovered somewhat, although I was tired of life with its struggles, and I had not the least hope.
My cousin told us the little she knew about Christian Science and it appealed to me, so I was asked if I would care to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I can never tell anyone how I looked forward to attending the church. The peaceful feeling I experienced when I entered was wonderful; I seemed to let go my burdens and I asked what it was that made the people's faces shine so. The love shown to me by strangers made me think of Jesus' words, "I was a stranger, and ye took me in." After my first visit to the church I regained my lost hope; I was happier and freer; and I found I did not need the windows open to help me to breathe and sleep. Then I began to look forward to my meals and enjoy them—something I had not done for a long time. In fact mu whole outlook on life had changed because I had found what I had been seeking—the truth that makes one free.
The textbook was lent to me and I read it every minute I had to spare. On page 376 we read, "The pallid invalid, whom you declare to be wasting away with consumption of the blood, should be told that blood never gave life and can never take it away,—that Life is Spirit, and that there is more life and immortality in one good motive and act, than in all the blood which ever flowed through mortal veins and simulated a corporeal sense of life." That statement of the truth healed me of fear, and whenever the hemorrhage appeared I just knew that God is Life, and that my life did not depend on blood.
Christian Science is helping me daily to overcome the fear of lack. About five years ago, when a human channel for supply ceased, suitable work was found with the help of a practitioner, which enabled me to keep our home going and provide for my daughter and myself. That was after being told I should never work again.
Before we took up the study of Christian Science we were residing in the country, and on asking the doctor if it would be better if I could get a house nearer the town so as to be close to my people who wished to look after me, I was told I could not possibly exist for a week in the town; but in less than a year after my first visit to the Christian Science church a suitable house was found, which met our needs and enabled us to attend the church more regularly. It was in one of the most congested parts of the city, but I can truthfully say that I was healthier and happier there than I had ever been.
About two years ago an abscess appeared on my back. At times the pain was almost unbearable and I did not seem to be able to help myself, so I asked a practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. When I arrived home in the evening after my second visit to the practitioner I was in acute agony and felt absolutely exhausted, not having had any sleep for about a fortnight. Suddenly the pain disappeared, and the thought came to me, "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword," and I realized that I was completely healed. I have also been cured of scalds, colds, chest troubles to which I had been in bondage all my life, and numerous other ailments.
I am extremely grateful for all the healings I have had, and for the enlightenment they have brought. I am grateful for membership in a Christian Science Society and the privilege of taking part in the church work; to the friends and practitioner who have never tired of giving their loving help; and I can never express in words my gratitude to the one who brought Christian Science to our home. The only way I feel I can show my appreciation is by living a life which conforms to the teachings of Christian Science. To our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I feel I owe endless homage for her pure, unselfish life and love, which enabled her to give to the world this wonderful truth.
(Mrs.) Lily Senior, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
I, too, am very grateful for the healings which my mother has experienced, and for the wonderful way in which a position was found for me when to material sense it seemed impossible. I am also grateful for the many healings I have experienced, and for the Sunday school, which is helping me daily.—(Miss) Edith Senior.
