The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Bingley, Yorkshire, England (Society).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Miss Annie L. M. Atkinson, who said: —

Many years ago, when suffering from a nervous breakdown, I attended a Christian Science lecture for the first time. During many weary months I had tried to be patient, partly because I thought it was God's will that I should be sick. This misapprehension of God's nature, was, however, completely dispelled when the lecturer pointed out that if it is right to be sick, one was acting contrary to the Father's will by healing the sick. In that hour despair gave place to hope, for I learned that God is divine Love, who does not send sickness but heals it. In Psalms we read, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Kansas City, Missouri (Second Church).

Lecturer: John Ellis Sedman; introduced by George C. Ewing, who said: —

From the beginning of human history, mankind has been striving to free itself from bondage and attain that freedom and dominion which brings health, happiness, and harmony. Down through the ages, individuals as well as nations have undergone hardships, have labored and sacrificed that man's glorious heritage of liberty might be preserved and enjoyed.

The Bible records many things concerning the experiences of the children of Israel. We read of their bondage and how God sent Moses to deliver them. We read of their trials and tribulations, their wanderings in the wilderness in doubt and fear. We learn how they were sustained and protected until they were finally led into the promised land of freedom and abundance. These experiences are typical of those of each individual human consciousness in its struggle to obtain freedom from the bondage of sin, sickness, fear, discouragement, and lack.

Today Christian Science offers a full salvation from the ills of the flesh, and leads the way out of material bondage. It supplies the spiritual understanding which brings the human consciousness into contact with God's power and presence.

This healing truth came into my experience at a time of great need. It found me in the depths of discouragement and despondency. It scattered the clouds of doubt and despair, and let in the sunshine of hope and faith. It gave me a God whom I could love and revere. Christian Science has healed me of false appetites. It has restored me to health in times of sickness. It has comforted me when in sorrow and has brought peace and joy into my life. It is helping me to overcome fear and worry and is aiding me in meeting the problems of daily experience. What Christian Science has done for me and thousands of others it can do for all, and even more, when its teachings are rightly understood and applied.

Humanity owes a debt of gratitude to that noble woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered the Science of Life and gave it to the world in its purity and simplicity.

Reno, Nevada (First Church).

Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by Mrs. Belle W. Busey, who said: —

Christian Science was brought to my attention over fifteen years ago. At that time I was suffering from chronic indigestion and a nervous breakdown. For five years I had sought relief of many physicians and exhausted the remedies medical doctors had to offer. These failing to effect a cure I was heartily discouraged, and it was then I turned to Christian Science. After three weeks' treatment by a loving practitioner I was healed. This proved conclusively to me that Christian Science does heal. I was filled with gratitude for this healing and rejoiced that the truth had been revealed to me — that God is always present and that in His presence all error is eliminated. Since that time I have had many healings and many blessings. Christian Science has brought peace and joy into our home and has given us a dependable understanding of divine Principle. It is indeed the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus.
