Jesus Our Great Exemplar

[Original article in German]

OUR great Master, who with tender love worked and suffered for the salvation of distressed humanity, and who has left his example to all mankind, was, as Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 313), "the most scientific man that ever trod the globe." He confirmed his teachings by his works and taught the truth concerning God; hence he was able to prove indisputably the powerlessness of disease, sin, and death. He exemplified his teaching by his deeds. Christ Jesus was the great expounder of spiritual law, and men are understanding his teachings through a knowledge of the truth and the understanding of God and His law, that law which enabled him to heal. Not only did he heal the sick himself, but by his example he encouraged his disciples to do the same. The Master said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." He indicated that by their works only could they prove their discipleship.

The same is true today. The healing works can be accomplished only by those who believe in Christ Jesus and his doctrine. In all that he did Jesus implied that the power which he applied was not his own. He declared, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."

It is an indisputable fact that Jesus accomplished his healing works logically and, at the same time, scientifically. He made no use of medicine, and yet he healed "all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." The same scientific method which he utilized Christian Science is using today in the healing of human infirmities and in the destruction of sin. Hence as followers of our Master it should be our most sacred duty to prepare ourselves for this healing work. On page 192 of the Christian Science textbook Mrs. Eddy says, "We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics."
