For a number of years before coming into Christian Science...
For a number of years before coming into Christian Science my health had been failing. Severe headaches and a continual pain in my side increased until, after a thorough examination, the physician diagnosed the trouble as cancer and advised me to have an immediate operation. However, the surgeons did not wish to operate at that time, and I was told to come back in a short while. Soon after I returned home my wife passed on, and I was left with three little ones to care for. Continual treatments from my home doctor were of no avail. I was on a strict diet, but gradually grew weaker. I should have welcomed death, but the thought of the little ones kept me trying to find health. At that time a friend advised me to try Christian Science, but he was told that I needed medicine, not religion. Shortly after this another friend suggested that I try Christian Science, and someone else mailed me some literature, which I promptly burned.
One evening, as I pondered over this condition of affairs, the thought came to me to ask God for help. I immediately cried out to Him and a sense of peace came over me. As I looked in the bookcase for something to read, I came across "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had not bought this book and was unaware how it had come there. I read the chapter on Prayer and it appealed to me; so I determined to read more of it, setting aside fifteen minutes each day for this purpose. As I continued to read, the truth was unfolded to me; the unreality of sickness and disease stood out so plainly that before I finished reading the volume I was completely healed. The pain left, the headaches were gone, and I felt like a new man; medicine was discarded, and I enjoyed the pleasure of eating anything I wished. Gratitude to God fills my heart for this and the many other blessings that my family and I have received through the study and practice of Christian Science. — Royel C. Redlich, Butte, Montana.
