Ushering—a Preparatory School

THE work of ushering in a Christian Science church is of great importance and is productive of much good for the individual, and thus helps in the advancement of the Cause of Christian Science. An "usher," according to a dictionary, is "a person in charge of a door of entrance; hence, an officer whose business it is to introduce strangers."

An usher in a Christian Science church is truly a "door-keeper in the house of . . . God;" a doorkeeper indeed of the temple, alert to welcome the stranger, the earnest seeker after Truth, and always on guard to know the nothingness of all phases of discord which might endeavor to enter the portals of our house of worship and interfere with God's healing message. He is truly standing faithfully at the door, watching, guarding, and protecting.

Ushers are a point of contact with newcomers to a Christian Science church. Frequently they are the first to become acquainted with the stranger and the first to greet him. By reason of their duties they familiarize themselves with the Manual of The Mother Church, the by-laws of their local church or society, the order of church services; and faithfulness in this service may prove to be a stepping-stone in their spiritual progress. "Alertness to Duty," the caption for Section 6 of Article VIII of the Church Manual, might well be the slogan of all our ushers, because it is only by manifesting alertness that an usher fulfills in a loving and orderly manner the duties of his post with credit to himself and to the organization he represents.
