Nineteen years ago I suddenly found myself in a physical condition which necessitated an immediate operation of a severe nature. The operation left me in a physical and mental state which, for the next three years, made my life a veritable hell. All the efforts of my medical advisers, including two eminent specialists, were unavailing; and finally I lost all confidence in their treatment and came to the conclusion that my days were numbered. Although to my acquaintances I was apparently leading a normal life, actually I expected each day would be my last.

It was at this point, sixteen years ago, that I passed a Christian Science Reading Room in Manchester, in the window of which the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was displayed. The words "Science and Health" attracted me, and I was impelled to enter the Reading Room. On inquiry, I learned that the book could be borrowed. I borrowed it, and read it from beginning to end. I had not read many pages before I came to the conclusion that I had found something which could restore my confidence and health. For the first time in my life I began to understand something about God and to realize in a measure the real relationship between God and man, that relationship which must have been recognized by the Psalmist when he referred to God "who healeth all thy diseases." The continued reading and study of this textbook completely changed my mental outlook. The Bible, a book which I had almost totally neglected, became my daily study in conjunction with Science and Health. Its teachings became intelligible in the light which Christian Science throws upon its pages. I found that in Christian Science I had indeed discovered the "key" to the Scriptures, and that the Bible was, as Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 24), "the chart of life." This transformation in thought resulted in a gradual restoration of health, and for many years I have been able to lead a normal, active life.

Christian Science has not only healed me physically, but has also exercised a beneficial influence in my domestic, social, and business affairs. It has been amply proved in my experience that Christian Science is the truth which brings to mankind complete salvation from all error, physical and mental.
