In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 266), is the following statement: "Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love."
It was in "this hour of development" (ibid.) that I turned to Christian Science for help, when suffering from physical disease and great mental stress. While I was in a strange city at the Christmas season, 1907, this mental suffering reached its climax. In an effort to gain seclusion I was led to a quiet spot, rejoicing in the prospect of being alone with God, in my effort to find a way out of my unhappy environment. With regret I discovered my retreat was already occupied by a woman in evident great sorrow. Seeing her need, I could only stay to cheer and comfort her, and in the desire to comfort I was comforted. It developed that she knew of Christian Science and was having help at the time; and seeing my physical distress, she begged me to find out what it could do for me.
Upon my return home a practitioner was located. I told her that I did not know anything of Christian Science; that I did not like mental experimentations; that I had gone through the schools of medicine, being the daughter of a physician, and was still a medicine "crank," though weary of the fruitless years spent with doctors and specialists; that I was perfectly satisfied with my own church and did not wish any contact with the Christian Science church; that I knew nothing of Mrs. Eddy, and was not interested in knowing anything about her; in other words, that I wished only to be well.
