Mrs. Eddy, who revealed to the world the pure Science...
Mrs. Eddy, who revealed to the world the pure Science of Christ, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 560), "The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love." The first healing that I received through Christian Science seemed indeed miraculous to me. I had been seriously ill for several years, but had to earn my living, nevertheless. The physical exhaustion became intense, and my heart was affected. On the street I often had the feeling that I was nearing death, and that I was going to faint. I had to make a real effort before I could find enough courage to go out alone. But I fought against my fear and against the sense of exhaustion, hoping that moral energy and the blind faith which I then had would uphold me; and I did not cease my work. After several months of struggle I passed an entire night without sleeping, owing to the sense of oppression and distress. The next day I tried in vain to remain up and about.
Then I decided to ask help of a Christian Science practitioner, although I did not yet have faith in Christian Science. In a few minutes the practitioner freed me from the terrible uneasiness which was depriving me of sleep. She simply told me to fear nothing, but to place complete reliance on divine Love; and she offered to help me. I experienced so much gratitude for this spiritual help offered in my distress, that with the confidence of a little child I immediately tried to do what was asked of me and to rest in God's love. After a couple of minutes the relief was so complete that I was delighted. I had just had the living proof of the truth expressed by the Apostle John, "Perfect love casteth out fear." As I have since gone deeper into Christian Science and endeavored to put its teaching into practice, I have understood to what purity of love thought must attain in order to bring such results; for at that time I was so ill, so spent, and so desperate that nothing on earth could have relieved me instantaneously save this wonderful, divine, ever present Love, reflected and expressed by a Christian Science practitioner. Although I may have understood but little of Love, my gratitude is indeed profound.
I have had many other occasions for gratitude, and the following is one of the most important of them. A surgeon and the doctor who had cared for me sentenced me to a serious operation which they declared to be urgent. In the meantime they would have kept me in bed or on a couch. Thanks to a sincere and conscientious study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, as well as to the firm help of the practitioner, who continually turned my thoughts to divine Love, I was able to leave my bed, earn my living again in very active fashion, and resume quite a normal diet. For six months before studying Christian Science I had been reduced to a meager liquid diet which I have now stopped, as well as the taking of daily medicines which I had never dared to do without. This again was a miracle to human sense. I feel particular gratitude toward the practitioner who spiritually supported my first faltering steps toward the light, and toward all the friends who have shown me so much love.
