Signs of the Times

[Rev. John Walter Houck, as quoted in the Bronx Democrat, New York]

Present-day books and periodicals contain a wealth of criticism, of suggested remedies for present ills, but how seldom do we find the range and scope of emotions that are needed to exalt life. . . . Man cannot live on criticism alone. Our modern authors do not care to tell us how to improve our personal lives, or else they do not know how.

The Bible has no rival in this age when the individuality of man is threatened by the machine and is relegated to the background. We crave a more exalted view of what man can do. We yearn for a wider scope of human emotions than the physical. We must find, somewhere, nourishment for the hunger of our souls. The Bible . . . points the way from mortality to glorious immortality. It is still the greatest book.
