Your issue of February 13 contained a report of an address at Mount Pleasant Chapel in regard to the teachings of Christian Science. In reading it, one feels that the address has been delivered by one who has approached the subject from a narrow and not very well-informed point of view, which calls for a statement of facts.
The name "Christian Science" was given by Mary Baker Eddy to her discovery, which is defined by her as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1). After demonstrating that this law of God, when properly applied, healed the sick and reformed the sinner as in the time of Christ Jesus and his disciples, Mrs. Eddy wrote the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Through the spiritual understanding gained from the study of this book, in conjunction with the Bible, thousands of people have been healed, and have also learned how to heal others.
The Church of Christ, Scientist, which has branch churches and societies throughout the greater part of the civilized world, is founded on this spiritual understanding. Mrs. Eddy's purpose in founding this church was stated to be (Church Manual, p. 17), "To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
